Since the Revolutionary War in Richmond County consisted of months and months of licensed
lawlessness, it was appropriate that it ended in the courthouse. Beginning in June 1782,
wartime Patriots evened the score through a series of civil and criminal trials.

The highlight came with seventeen September trials, in which thirty-nine Richmond County
men faced charges of treason. State Attorney Morgan Brown tried the first few cases on Friday,
Oct. 4, warming up to the bulk of trials beginning Saturday morning at 8:00. Except for the
verdicts, details are long lost.

Of the thirty-nine men prosecuted, five were found guilty-- William Burt, Duncan McFarland,
John Peek, John Thornton, and Shadrack Williamson. Another twenty-five swore allegiance to
the Continental Government, and were found not guilty.

The marriage data is actually the date on Richmond County marriage bond showing Thomas W. Wright
as the bondsman.

Notes for JOSEPH HARRINGTON WRIGHT:
Sometime in the late 1850's, Joseph moved his family to Autauga Co. Alabama. They can be found
on the 1860 Census (listed as Right) living in the Independence area. Joseph's occupation is
listed as Blacksmith. It is unknown at this time if he served during the war.
Two documents pertaining to the sale & purchase of land w/Joseph & Ann's signatures(or marks)
were found in Autauga. During their time in Alabama, 2 of their children, Daniel & Emma were born.
Joseph move the family back to Richmond Co. NC after the war.
It is not known why they moved to Alabama. We speculate that they followed family (Wright, Williamson, Brown)
there. A further search into the counties of Autauga, Monroe & Lowdnes might be fruitful.

It is not known who Josephs parents were. I suspect that it may have been Thomas Wright who married
Nancy Williamson. Thomas was listed on the marriage bond of Joseph & Ann. Nancy Williamson was the
sister of Rebecca Williamson who married Daniel Brown (Ann's parents). If this is true, that would
make Joseph & Ann cousins. Source: Susan Hoke
